The Tailgate

So JJ Watt signed today, announcing it via Instagram. The post shows him working out in an Arizona Cardinals shirt with the caption “Source: Me”. The contract is apparently for 2 years 31 million with 23 million guaranteed. No word on any other parts of the contract like a no trade clause or something like that. Honestly, I feel that this will (in the future) be a black eye for Watt’s career, he has been such a dominant force in Houston and won several personal accolades. But this look is bad. I respect chasing the Lombardi Trophy, that is reasonable. But this looks more money driven rather than championship driven. If he stayed healthy consistently I’d say he would give the Cards a better chance but that is not the case at all. Since 2015 JJ Watt has only played 2 complete seasons. If he were human he would have retired by 2017 but JJ Watt (when healthy) is a monster. Now with Kyler Murray behind the center at QB and DeAndre Hopkins as a #1 wideout their offense has had no problems getting to the red zone but the red zone has been public enemy number 1 in Glendale. Their defense leaves something to be desired, maybe Watt can help. The Cards were the 12th ranked defense in the NFL last year, but with the first half schedule including the Washington Football Team, New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys post Dak Prescott injury, those games really bumped up their numbers. But they did show true signs of life beating tough teams like Seattle. But losing to teams like Detroit in week 3 by a field goal and the Carolina Panthers a week later by 10 points really shows that this team has horrible inconsistencies. All in all JJ Watt will make a difference. If he stays healthy I can see him taking this 12th ranked defense and putting them at the 10 spot making it more respectable. But the offense is the problem. Sure they got it done against the NFC East but the NFC East beat themselves more than any other division in football history. I honestly don’t understand why JJ Watt didn’t go for teams like Buffalo who were up and coming and have a real shot at a superbowl and are possibly just one defensive lineman away from achieving that goal. It’ll probably come out that Arizona was the only team offering something and I will look like an Idiot but until that comes out, this is a tough look for JJ.
