I will be blatantly honest with you, I stopped watching wrestling for a good 11-12 years there for a bit, but then for some reason in the Summer of 2012 I turned on WWE Raw that night. Then I saw this dude, who was right in the middle of an historic WWE title run, now he wasn't the biggest, wasn't the most athletic, but god damn there was something about this dude that I just gravitated to. That dude was CM Punk, this guy was a hell of a wrestler, he could talk on the mic....shit this dude literally did it all. Then I watched his infamous "Pipe Bomb" promo and god damn it if it wasn't the best promo I've ever seen at the time and to be honest I'm not sure if I've seen a better one since. That's the reason I started watching the WWE again, then the Daniel Bryan craze seems to start and Punk got pushed to the back burner. Now in no way am I saying the push of Daniel Bryan sucked because it was fucking awesome but at the same time Punk just got stuck and they kept giving him shit after shit after shit. Then almost as quickly as I got into WWE again to watch CM Punk? It was all gone, he started #1 in the Royal Rumble in 2014, got eliminated by Kane who wasn't even in the match and just like that Punk was gone from WWE. The next day Punk came into WWE, basically said he was sick of the bullshit and he left. Punk had a quick but horrendous stint in the UFC getting dominated by Mickey Gall then Mike Jackson, most of us thought that was the end for CM Punk. Yeah there was murmurs and small rumors of Punk returning to the ring....but fuck that's been going on for 7 years. But then it happened....
August 20th, 2021....every single true wrestling fan will remember where they were. It was Chicago....AEW Rampage.....and Cult of Personality hit. The crowd in Chicago was absolutely deafening, I don't think I'm too crazy saying this but this pop was just as loud as when Austin came out toe help Mick Foley win the WWF title. You could barely even hear the song playing the crow was so loud. Then he walked out from behind the curtain and right away this seemed to be a different CM Punk.....the difference being that he seemed happy. He came out and soaked up every single second of this moment. Then he got on the mic and cut a promo like he's been doing it like he never left the industry. He took some shots at WWE, which were warranted, he said he wanted to wrestle some young talent and proceeded to call out AEW's Darby Allin. Now I'll be the first to admit I've never been the biggest fan of Darby but he's going against Punk at the next AEW PPV in Chicago and if we all know Punk he's gonna put on one hell of a match. During the promo Punk stated that he understands if the fans got upset at choices that he made in the past during his journey but intern asked the fans to understand that he had to leave the WWE because he would never get better psychically or emotionally staying there. He spoke on how he had to leave Ring of Honor in August of 2005 saying that that was the day he left professional wrestling then went on to state on August, 20th 2021 he's back. Punk basically saying that the WWE isn't professional wrestling. Which lately I can't disagree, WWE is more about shitty storylines and putting old wrestlers in big spots that no one gives a shit about. In CM Punk fashion he ended the promo with telling everyone to pick up a CM Punk ice cream bar before they left, which we all know was something he wanted back in WWE. Punk coming back is awesome for wrestling as a whole but more importantly so awesome for AEW. Welcome back Punk, wrestling missed you
