Good lord almighty, before I get to the Main Event and the other fights, we have to talk about Cory Sandhangen. What he did to Frankie Edgar last night was just crazy and if you’re a longtime UFC fan? Difficult to watch Frankie Edgar fall like that. Sandhagen pulled Edgar into that flying knee and just slept him, this should leave no doubt that he has to face the winner of Petr Yan v’s Aljamain Sterling (UFC 259: for the bantamweight title)....it’s title shot or nothing at this point if i’m Sandhagen. The Main Event saw two giants of the Heavyweight division go at it. We saw Allisair Overeem take on Alexander Volkov and to be honest? It wasn’t even close. Volkov put constant pressure on Overeem, it’s odd to say but Volkov’s striking was just superior to Overeem. Volkov peppered him with the jab for all one and a half rounds of this fight. The mat looked like I was watching an episode of the First 48, there was so much blood sprayed on the canvas. The question is, what happens now? Does Overeem retire? I doubt it, the guy is still a force in the Ufc’s heavyweight division despite being 40 years old, a title shot will probably be out of reach now for him but he’ll still keep fighting. Now for Volkov, he’s almost certainly going to be in the Top 5 when the rankings come out. I honestly don’t think it’s much of a stretch to think Volkov deserve’s the next title shot at Heavyweight, which is such a shallow division. Now, this all depends on what Jon Jones plans are at heavyweight, the guys been talking about it for what seems like years now and if he says he wants next crack at the Heavyweight strap? I don’t think Dana will say no. Side notes: Clay Guida beat out Michael Johnson in a 3 round war, in classic Guida fashion Manel Kape made his UFC debut in a loss to #5 ranked Alexandre Pantoja, Kape looked very hesitant most of the fight and Pantoja threw a lot more significant strikes. Beneil Dairush beat Carlos Diego Ferreira by split decision these dudes went for it and it’s time to give Dairush a top 6-7 guy, he’s on a 6-fight win streak and has been on an absolute tear. Ode Osbourne opened the card with a 26 second knockout of Jerome Rivera “Meatball” Molly McCann (best nickname in MMA) lost a decision to Lara Procipo , afterwards McCann left her gloves in the cage. Normally this signifies that the fighter is retiring, but McCann took to twitter saying “Before i get into it. I left the gloves in the cage for my dad. There’s still fight in this old dog yet”. She was commemorating her fathers birthday, who passed away before her fight career started.
